Do you think I should have kids if I have a disease that leads to colon cancer

Do you think I should have kids if I have a disease that leads to colon cancer?
I found out I have FAP when I was 12 and I was just wondering if anybody has had kids when they have had it, but not passed it on to their kids. I already have pre-cancerous cells in my stomach and colon, and I have to have surgury during winter break this year, and I'm so worried. I told my boyfriend about it and he wants to be at the hospital when i have my surgury. Do you think I'm going in the right direction? Or should I just adopt so I can't take a risk?

1 :
I wouldn't. Especially as there are so many children waiting to be adopted.
2 :
That question is really up to you and your doctor
3 :
You better ask gynecologist. they know better.
4 :
I'm not familiar with your disease, but if I knew for one minute, that I had a possibility of passing on a potentially life threatening disease to one of my children, I wouldn't get pregnant. This decision is not about you or your future husband, it's about the children you would bring into this world. If they were to be the recipient of the disease, would you ever forgive yourself, as you watched your child suffer with the disease, knowing you could have prevented it? As far as adopting, you have to ask yourself, what are your chances of being around to raise this child? How manageable is FAP? You also need to consult with more than one doctor. This is a life altering decision, not only for you, but for any child you bring into it, through pregnancy or adoption.
5 :
FAP occurs when a person is born with a mutation in a specific gene called the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene. People born with FAP are at nearly 100 percent risk of developing colon cancer if they do not undergo surgery. They also have an elevated risk of contracting certain other types of cancer. Among them are cancer of the small bowel (the part of the digestive tract located above the colon and rectum); cancer of the thyroid and cancer of the brain, as well as a rare form of childhood liver cancer. People with FAP account for roughly one percent of all colon cancer cases. About 1 in every 8,000 people has FAP. FAP is inherited in what's called autosomal dominant fashion. This means that a person only needs to inherit one mutated version of an FAP associated gene in order to have FAP and a high risk for cancer. Because of the way we inherit genes, if one of your parents has FAP, you have a 50 percent chance of inheriting it. Likewise, if you have FAP, your children have a 50 percent chance of inheriting it. So, your child may or may not inherit this disease. A 50% chance....I would talk to your Dr. about it for more information. Good luck to you.
6 :
About one in four people get some kind of cancer. So unless you think a quarter of the population should not have ANY children (wait, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing!) then you are thinking too hard. Genetics are only one part of the cancer risk profile; someone at "high risk" genetically who lives a healthy life with a healthy diet will likely not get colon cancer, whereas someone at low genetic risk who lives on low-fiber foods, smokes, drinks a lot & gets no exercise will likely develop the disease...
7 :
The decision to have children should be left up to you and your partner. There is no right or wrong answer here. You know what it is like to be tested every year from childhood and that is what would happen to any child you have who inherits this condition. Your child has a 50/50 percent chance of being normal too .. or having the gene but not the condition. Hopefully with advances in medical science the answers to solving this condition will some day be available. Until that time . . having a child is up to you and your doctor. You should research this as much as possible and find others who have made decisions about what to do. I don't think you need to automatically believe you should not have children. Once you know that you have FAP you will always be monitored and any cancer that develops will be taken care of very early. Small stage 1 cancer is easily removed. It is advanced stage IV cancer that is difficult to manage. Because you are being watched you will be very careful to have any nodules removed early. Stay strong. Do some more research and be hopeful.
8 :
Having children is hard enough when everything is normal. Why not wait at least for now. I wouldnt worry about that now but rather later. Meanwhile my best advice is that birth control methods are not 100 percent effective so you need to know that.

How will a person feel a few days after having part of their colon removed for cancer

How will a person feel a few days after having part of their colon removed for cancer?
My mother had some of her colon removed a few days ago because of cancer and i was wondering how a person will feel or side effects after the surgery? She was looking good yesterday but today she is getting sick, has shortness of breath, and has massive diarrhea.Opinions?

She will get better. It's a serious surgery so she is going to feel bad afterwards. This time next week u guys will be good to go.
2 :
It can take a few months for her system to adjust. I didn't have the same surgery, but part of my small intestine, 45 cm, about 18 inches before the colon. I only got back to near normal in a year. I'm not the same as before surgery, but much improved functions. Maybe her doctor can help.
3 :
be always near to your loved dearest unique mother at every moment of her life. be in her service full time and if possible if you are working, do take a leave from service for her. there is only one life to human beings. nobody knows what is after life. so enjoy every moment is your mother and do not think of her status. it is of no use. do not feel sorry about her. she herself have to sustain with her disease. it is not in your hand as well as in her hand now. i knows that you are tried and will try your best for her. all the best to you for enjoying every moment of each day with your beloved mother.
4 :
That is going to happen. She will have bad diarrhea for a good few days at least, and when it stops being runny she may find it hard to hold it in, depending on what part of her colon was removed. Her bowel movement will be erratic. She may have a day where she doesn't go at all, or a whole day of constantly going. Through my experience this should last for a few weeks, but it definitely gets better. When she has diarrhea, make sure she drinks plenty of fluids. She should eat some jelly babies, I was advised to eat that by my doctors when I had this same surgery, apparently it helps somehow. Peppermint tea is also good for any discomfort she feels in her stomach and bowels.

Can a patient with colon cancer recieve chemotherapy twice a day

Can a patient with colon cancer recieve chemotherapy twice a day?
Also are there cases where patients would have to practically live in the hospital to have chemo done? What are common side effects of chemotherapy?
Cancer - 3 Answers

1 :
I dont know a whole lot about colon cancer, it would depend on the specific type of cancer and the treatment protocol. However, yes, there are situations like that. My cancer is leukemia, and I was admitted for all of my treatments, for a min of a week and received chemo on a continuous drip for the treatment for 5 days. There are a couple of times that I was admitted for 4 weeks, and once that I was admitted for 6 weeks. That is common for leukemia though. One of my hospital mates had been admitted for 4 months. Talk to the doctor about the specific treatment protocol and the most common side effects associated with the specific meds. If you dont know, cancer and chemo are both just umbrella terms. There are over 200 different types of cancer, so when you say colon cancer, that doesnt tell us a lot, there are many different types of cancer that could start in the colon, and when you say chemo, there are thousands of meds that can fall under that category.
2 :
Yes, a drug called Xeloda (Capecitabine) used in colon cancer is used twice daily. In addition other medications will also be there as combination chemotherapy is usually prescribed. Yes in alternative therapies as FOLFOX, FOLFIRI etc, admission to hospital is required, as they are continuos therapies. Side effect of therapy depends on the drugs used.
3 :
The frequency of chemotherapy is dependent on the severity of the cancer. So, if the doctor deems it needed to have two chemo therapies done during the day, then yes, it is possible. Patients often opt to stay at the hospital while having chemotherapy so when any complications occur, medical care is easily given. Also, their condition is easily monitored when in the hospital. Common side effects of chemotherapy include weakness, nausea, headache, loss of appetite, etc.

What are some symptons of colon cancer

What are some symptons of colon cancer?
I've had an off and on small pain in my right side just below my rib cage for about 10 weeks now.I've had ultra sound and cat scan test that showed no gallstones and everything looked good. They want to do an colonoscopy on me next week and told me to stop my asprin and plavix until after the test.I don't think this is a good Idea .I just had a drug stent placed on Nov,just 4 months ago.Any sugestions.

1 :
I think as physicians, they are the most aware.. My father has had a colonoscopy with stents, bypass and pacemaker.. He did just fine.. It is not the coloscopy that is bad.. It is the prep... They may find diverticulitius... Stick with what the MD's are telling you and don't depend upon the general public for diagnosis.. Your life is too important
2 :
I'm no doctor, so don't listen to my advice as anything more than that: advice. There is more that can happen than just colon cancer. You may have an ulcer or irritable bowel syndrome. Only the colonoscopy can tell definitively. I wouldn't spend this week worrying about it until you get the results back. However, you should cut down on spicy, saucy, and cheesy foods until you know for sure. I have a history of ulceratic colitis in my family and my doctor has told me not to eat cheese, spices, citric fruits, tomatoes, caffeine, or chocolate.
3 :
We have a family friend she found out that she has colon cancer from her stool. Her stool has blood in it. She found out she's in the later stage of colon cancer. Doctors have to cut few inches of her colon.
4 :
Stop your aspirin an Plavix and get the colonoscopy. The few days you will be off them will not cause you any problems with your stent. If you still have doubts call your cardiologists office and ask for his recommendations. I'm sure he will say it is ok.
5 :
I had colon cancer in 2005, at least that's when the symptoms began. Both the doctors and I thought it was irritable bowel syndrome, but after three months of belly cramps and occasional diarrhea, my doctor felt a large mass on the right side. Occult blood stool test - negative. Barium enema X-ray - negative. Colonoscopy - the doc couldn't get the probe past the mass. The tumor, along with 1/2 my large intestine, was removed in January 2006, and the ends sewn up. No need for chemotherapy (no significant benefit for Stage II cancer). I have read a lot about this condition and its treatment. Please believe me when I tell you that a colonoscopy is by far the best diagnostic tool to check your intestine for anything that's not right. You can ask for a general anesthetic (injection) so you won't feel a thing, and it's a quick procedure. They will remove samples of any suspicious tissue for analysis. E-mail me if you have any other questions.
6 :
Try this http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/colorectalcancer.html
7 :
They say that there are no symptoms for colon cancer. Only when your in the very late stages of it and then of course you would know for sure without question, that you have colon cancer. It may be possible you have polyps in your colon, that are aggravating your abdomen. About what the doctor has advice in not taking aspirin and plavix should be followed as he directed. You can call a pharmacist and also inquire with them about what your taking and if it is a problem. Explain what doctor mentioned as well. Pharmacist know medicine more then doctors. Doctors only prescribe, but can't tell you everything about the drugs.

My dad was recently diaganosed with colon cancer and went in to have a tumor removed

My dad was recently diaganosed with colon cancer and went in to have a tumor removed?
but they misdiagnosed the size and location of the tumors and he ended up having to get a colostomy. then he had to do chemo and radiation. well he went in to get the colostomy reversed and the doctors said they couldnt preform the surgery cuz he was given to much radiation and all of his insides are fused together in a giant mass. do you thinh we have a law suit?
Cancer - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
No, what you have is a cancer that was worse than they thought. Radiation has that risk, and it's one he took, which is better than being dead.
2 :
No, there is a risk of this when given radiotherapy. If he hadn't had the radio, then it could be the cancer infiltrating his insides! Be happy that you still have your dad.
3 :
Not necessarily a case of mal-practice. Diagnosis (before the surgery) is not accurate, and even with a good diagnosis he may have needed the colostomy. Regarding the radiation - there exists specific guidelines regarding the amount of radiation to give. Unless they gave much more than the guidelines without a justifiable reason, it seems that it was just an unfortunate case where your father's body was much more sensitive to radiation than normal. Lets hope that this period of suffering of your father will end with a full cure. The colostomy will be reversed eventually - when your father will get sufficient time to heal.
4 :
Oh yes! He has been given Iatrogenic treatment. It will take years to get comp, so be prepared for a long fight. Good luck

How common is colon cancer in young adults

How common is colon cancer in young adults?
20 years old. Most common causes for occational, rare traces of blood on toilet paper?
Cancer - 4 Answers

1 :
Any blood should be discussed with your doctor asap. Probably just hemorrhoids but if not, delaying that doctor visit by even a week can be a death sentence.
2 :
Cut Back on hard chips, coffee, beer, hard liquor, and eat right and you will get better.May be from staining on the toilet.Eat more because if you do not put some thing in nothing comes out and you will be just pooping your self.
3 :
Over 80% of colon cancers occur in people over the age of 60, so not very common in young people. Bleeding is more often caused by something other than cancer - most frequently, hemorrhoids.
4 :
Different types of cancer happen at different ages . . and colon cancer happens to be a type of cancer that occurs in older adults and not in young adults. The exception would be an uncommon hereditary type of colon cancer . . if your mother or father have died or have colon cancer and other members of your family have had colon cancer than there is a higher risk for you to develop colon cancer at some point in time . . other than that it is not common at all for young adults to get organ related cancers such as colon, breast, or lung cancer. Those are all cancers that occur as you age and the older you get the higher the risk. Young adults can get cancer . . but it is usually leukemia, lymphoma, sarcoma, brain tumor, testicular or ovarian, or melanoma related . . rarely will they get an older adult type cancer. How do i write a introduction for a colon cancer paper for anatomy/physiology? can someone please help me?
i have to write a paper, i know how to do my body paragraphs but as for the introduction i am lost. i know in a persuasive paper you write your opinions pretty much, but what would you write for a research paper like this one? can someone please give me a sample of one, thanks so much. no. i am not. lol.

Are you persuading someone to have colon cancer?
2 :
Come up with your key points for each of your body paragraphs first. Your introductory paragraph should introduce your thesis, or the main point of your paper. You should then list your key points, without providing too much detail. Finally, close out the paragraph. If you can work in a hook for your first sentence (such as a question, or interesting fact or statistic), that will look much more impressive. Here is a very very basic example. Your paragraph should be longer, and better worded, depending on your grade level. Also, everything I wrote is bs I made up, so don't copy it. Did you know what colon cancer is statistically the most deadly form of cancer? This is because it spreads quickly, causes dangerous side effects, and doesn't respond well to treatment. Peoples chances are made even worse because they tend to be embarassed when they experience issues, or may refuse rectal exams and colonoscopys which would allow for early detection. The mortality rates of colon cancer could be decreased if everyone was better educated about this deadly disease.

The stage is the most important survival factor. And the sooner you have it removed the lower the stage. If the cancer is confined to the wall and hasn't spread anywhere (stage 1) the survival is more than 90%. If it has grown through the bowel wall but not spread to the lymph nodes the survival is almost 80%. The stage is determined by the pathologist through his examination of the removed cancer bearing colon segment. Here is a site with the stage dependent survival of colon cancer: http://www.webmd.com/colorectal-cancer/guide/treatment-stage

God can help you live a better life if you want Him to help you. You can have a personal relationship with God by saying the prayer below. God is our Creator, all-knowing, all-powerful, eternal, holy, love. God loves us and sent us His Son, Jesus Christ, so we can go to heaven if we know and follow Him. Forever means without end -- time on and on without death. Forever is what happens after we die. Either we go to heaven and be with God forever, or we go to hell which is very bad and painful forever. The good people who are saved believers in Jesus Christ go to heaven. The bad people go to hell. We need to know and follow God in this world to get to heaven in the next world. We follow God by loving and obeying Him and loving others for Him. Jesus Christ, God's Son, is our bridge to God. Jesus died on the cross to cancel our sins. We need to accept Jesus into our life as our Lord and Savior forever to receive God's blessing and forgiveness plus go to heaven to be with God forever after we die. This is about being a born-again Christian. Faith in God is a gift from God. You can pray for faith in God. Just speak out and ask God for the faith to believe in Him and to follow Him. Some people find faith in God when they realize the beauty in the world is made by God. Evolution can't explain the world's natural beauty, for example, the parks in the world, animals, flowers, peacocks, sunsets, butterflies, rainbows, etc. After you have your faith on, you can pray a sinner's prayer to be a born-again Christian. This prayer is very important and should be said with a sincere heart and faith in God. This is the prayer: "Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and that Jesus Christ is the sacrifice for our sins. I have done the following sins (state these out) and I pray to discontinue these sins. I pray to receive Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior forever. In Jesus' name, amen." I'm Lutheran and I like the Baptist churches. You could find a good Christian church and try a weekly Bible study group with them to learn more. You can pray to God about your daily life. God bless.

Can a colon cancer screening test detect polyps? what is the procedure for taking the test

can a colon cancer screening test detect polyps? what is the procedure for taking the test?
i do not want to take a colonoscopy at this time. what can the colon screening test achieve?
Cancer - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
It depends on the test. A colonoscopy can detect polyps and remove them at the same time. It's an outpatient procedure that's done under a sort of general anesthesia so you're basically asleep and don't know what's going on.
2 :
I'm not sure if you mean checking the stool for occult blood or a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy will detect polyps because that's just what it is. A scope that the doctor looks through. You will be given laxatives the night before the procedure with only clear liquids to eat the day before the procedure. The procedure itself isn't bad at all because the doctor will give you medicine through an IV which is called conscious sedation. The prep for the procedure is worse than the actual procedure! If you're being checked for occult blood, you collect your stool and swab it on a card and give it back to your doctor..I know it sounds gross, but that's how it's done. It will show any microscopic blood in your stool cause by possible bleeding polyps.
3 :
All of Autumlief̢۪s information is correct. However, you should know colonoscopy is the only test that can detect and remove polyps. It is the gold standard for colon cancer screening. By removing polyps before they become cancerous you can prevent the disease all together. By removing cancer that is confined to a polyp you prevent the disease from spreading. It is also the only way to know if you have a healthy colon. I know the test does not sound pleasant (I can̢۪t think of a medical exam that is.), but it is not painful. Do not accept any other test as a clean bill of health when it comes to colon cancer.

What tests do I need to undergo to see if I have prostate cancer or colon cancer Is it painless

What tests do I need to undergo to see if I have prostate cancer or colon cancer? Is it painless? ?
I am 33 years old and I'm just wondering if I should wait a few more years to undergo the tests. I know it's fatal.
Cancer - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Blood tests can detect prostate cancer, and a colonoscopy can detect colon cancer. Colonoscopies are no fun, but you will be sedated! If either of the cancers run in your family, you should talk to your doctor about early testing...maybe not at 33, but within the next few years.
2 :
matthew - You're wise, but perhaps you worry too much and have some inaccurate data. FIRST, the tests are not fatal and cancers of the prostate and colon are often cured, not routinely fatal. For prostate, wait till you reach about 45 in 12 years, and then you can request a simple annual screening blood for PSA (prostate-specific antigen). Meanwhile, during your annual exam, ask your doctor to do a simple digital rectal exam when he palpates the prostate gland via a finger inserted in the rectum to feel for any suspicious nodules in the prostate. At the same time he does that he can check for any rectal mass. For colon cancer screening, you can begin now to once-a-year get the series of 3 cards from your doc or lab on which you can smear a pea-sized sample of stool (feces) once daily for 3 days, and submit to the lab for testing for any hidden blood since colon cancer sometimes is discovered with traces of blood in the stool. The tests are painless except for an ordinary blood sampling stick or, for some guys an uncomfortable digital finger rectal example. After about 45 years of age you could request a more extensive screening colonscopy exam once every 10 years.
3 :
don't wait mens should start at age 20 to check for prostate cancer, blood work, stool test and a colonoscopi, with the colonocospi you be sedate.

Ecclesiastes 3:1. It became a popular hit folk song in the 60's in the song "Turn, Turn, Turn". The verse is often used in eulogies; however, it is very applicable to the living who need the strength to go on after some bad event in their lives. It begins "There is a season and a purpose to everything under god". You can choose to use only those parts that fit what you are trying to communicate to your friend. I made cards and sent them to a friend who had recently had to have a long time, well loved pet put to sleep, and to my sister whose ex-husband committed suicide this past August. The message was about the strength to overcome the tragedy and go on, so I didn't use the whole verse in either card. Personally, I have always used Philipians 4:13 to get me through the rough bumps in life, and some of those bumps have required a lot of strength to over come.

>"colon cancer" NO! First, the only way to check for a "tumor" in the colon is to have a "colonoscopy"! Normally, those are done on a routine basis for adults over 40 - 50 every 3-5 years. >"hemorrhoids" (Almost) everyone gets hemorrhoids, that's not unusual! Tell your doctor all your symptoms, and have him examine you. My experience and educated guess, a change of diet may be in order. Relax and stop worrying, your just growing up! LOL
3 :
i don't know about cancer that's for your doctor but the hemorrhoids you can get rid of with a simple herbal product . . your hemorrhoid might not be a problem for you know but trust me they get much worse if left untreated

How can you tell if you have colon cancer? What causes it

How can you tell if you have colon cancer? What causes it?
Random question...I do not think I have it or anything, but I hear about it everywhere. So how do you know if you have it? What causes it? Are there any symptoms?
Cancer - 3 Answers

1 :
You need to have a colonoscopy performed by a reputable physician.
2 :
The one true diagnostic procedure for cancer (usually any type of cancer) is to do a biopsy. Colonoscopy (a small camera on a scope that is fed through the anus and up the colon as far as possible) is done to look for cancer and to do biopsies. Some causes of colon cancer are: age, race, diet, irritable bowel diseases, alcohol, smoking, diabetes, environment, gender, genetics, history of polyps...
3 :
You can't tell if you have colon cancer. You have to have a colonoscopy which is when they insert a camera into you bowel through your bum. To have one, you have to be either over a certain age and hence are checked regularly, or because you may have symptoms or other bowel issues. I had some of the symptoms, which is what made me go to the doctor. However, the problem with colon cancer is that it doesn't show any symptoms until it is quite advanced. Symptoms are: - rectal bleeding - painful stomach cramps - constipation - diarrhoea - a feeling of having not emptied your bowels fully - fatigue There are many explanations for the causes of colon cancer but they include: - your age - your risk increases the older you are - your diet - a diet high in red meats and processed meat increases your risk - polyps - they are growths in the bowel which can turn cancerous - obesity - genetics - whilst it is a small percent, it does still happen (I was 20 when diagnosed) - bowel problems - e.g. IBS, chrons, ulcerative colitis But fortunately, colon cancer can be treated if caught early enough.

If you are looking for websites I have listed a few below. If you are looking for treatment centers that all depends on were you live. If you live near NY I would recommend Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Best Wishes to you and your family.

What do you mean in pathology of colon cancer findings, "all line of resection are free of tumor

What do you mean in pathology of colon cancer findings, "all line of resection are free of tumor?"?
Is it good prognosis? even if only 2 of 5 lymph nodes are invaded by cancer cells and pericolic fat are invaded.
Cancer - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
When we resect a tumor, we make sure that grossly or macroscopically we stay away from the tumor cells. We make sure that both proximally and distally the resected margins are not invaded or involved. For, if they are involved grossly, then the resection isn't complete resulting in positive margins which is not good. We expect a negative margin after a decent surgical exercise. The pathology report which comes there after will say that the lines of resection are free of tumour. If only it was involved it will not heal well resulting in a leaking or leaked anastomosis(meaning intestine-intestine stitching line). Resection margins free of tumour means it is a good surgery. The prognosis depends upon the tumour biology i.e., whether it is a well differentiated, moderately differentiated or poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. What is the NC ratio etc. Coming to the next half of your question, if only 2-5 nodes and pericolic fat are invaded what is the prognosis? Well, If the mesenteric lymph nodes are involved it is stage II. Modified Aster Coller Classification of Colonic tumors is as follows: Stage A: Only mucosa involved Stage B: Muscularis mucosa invloved Serosa not involved. Stage C: Serosa is involved breached. Stage D; Pericolic fat and Lymph nodal spread. Even though Mesocolic lymph nodes are involved, still the prognosis is quite good for Colonic Cancers unlike other cancers. They are generally slow growing. There is good chemotherapy like FOLFOX regime after surgery, which gives good results. There are higher chemotherapeutic regimes as well. It depends on your oncologist, which chemotherapy regimen he will choose for you. In FOLFOX there is no much hair loss also. Tolerated very well. However, If the treatment is taken to its logical end, Prognosis is really good in Colonic Cancers. Best of luck.
2 :
Your doctor should have gone over these results with you so you would know what it means and they should have also discussed prognosis as it pertains to your case specifically. I have never seen a pathology report written this way, but it means the margins are clear and if they were not it would not mean there would be leaking. Although having clear margins is good you cannot determine prognosis by it. A minimum of 12 nodes should have been sampled, but based on what you are stating this is a stage 3B with a 5 year survival rate of 56%.

Hello, It isn't really the only way, - I assume you are talking about having a flexible, television, optic-fibre endoscope-tube up your bum? This is rather more pleasant than the old way of doing it, which was to have a non-flexible steel tube called a 'sigmodoscope' up your bum! Here is a picture of one,... http://www.medisave.co.uk/images/welch-allyn-36146.jpg The latest way of doing it is by a "Virtual Colonoscopy," - - this is essentially a 'Computer Assisted Tomography' CAT X-ray scan, (or sometimes a 'Nuclear Magnetic Resonance' NMR scan) - - to produce amazing 3-D pictures without sticking anything inside you. There's a good reference for this at http://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info.cfm?PG=ct_colo&bhcp=1 you might like to look at, also in Wiki at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_colonoscopy I hope this is of some help. Best wishes, Belliger (retired uk gp)
3 :
There is NO other way to see into the large intestines at the lining for polyps, tumors, ulcers. and inflammation or bleeding. Virtual Colonoscopy this is a new method that allows doctors to look at the large bowel(colon) to detect polyps and cancers. Polyps are small growths in the colon that may become cancerous if not removed. Virtual colonoscopy is a recently developed technique that uses a CT scanner and computer virtual reality software to look inside the body without having to insert a long tube into the colon or with the liquid barium.(conventional colonoscopy). With this method its easy to see polyps and nearly as accurate as other way. The actual procedure will begin with a small flexible tube (rubber)placed in the rectum so air can be introduced. A CT is then preformed while person lies on back then stomach time for this is around 10-20 minutes. No sedation's needed. Basically no pain at all, just feel pressure from air or like might have gas.
4 :
Yes they can give you a barium drink & then take an x-ray. Anyway a colonoscopy is no big deal. It doesn't hurt. The worst part is no food for 24 hours before, but :- you can drink all you want to stay happy.

Is it possible for me to be diagnosed with colon cancer at age 17

Is it possible for me to be diagnosed with colon cancer at age 17?
I did some research after having pains in my lower right abdomen. I have a lot of the symptoms but it said it's usually diagnosed to people 50 and up. However I do have it in my genes, my grandpa was just recently diagnosed with it.
Cancer - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Not necessarily, a doctor and routine examinations would have to be carried out first to diagnose this, pains in your abdomen are a symptom for many illnesses or could just be something of a nuisance. Is there any colitis in your family, or irritable bowel syndrome? Monitor how often you have these pains and how long they last for each time and let your doctor know if your still worried.
2 :
If you are having real concerns about your abdominal pains then please go and see your doctor. As the previous answer said it could be one of many things. You need to have it sorted out even if its just for your peace of mind. I am sorry to hear that your Grandpa has got colon cancer but they can do a lot these days if it is caught in time. It isnt the death sentence it used to be. Medicine has come a long way over the years. Please go and see your doctor ok.
3 :
While it is possible, it is unlikely. The pains as you describe them could be anything from constipation to an appendix about to rupture. If you are concerned, see a Dr.
4 :
Not likely but possible. If you are in a high risk group than this does predispose you to getting it sometime in your life. Ask for a full colonoscopy. Most of the time they don't look at the entire colon, but due to your family history it would seem prudent .
5 :
yes it can happen expacilay if there is a history in your family but i would guess that you dont it might just be that your constipated or something like that.
6 :
It isn't usual; the greatest risk factor, as with most types of cancer, is age. Almost 85% of people diagnosed with colorectal cancers are over 60. Certainly the pains you describe could be caused by many, many conditions other than cancer. The fact that your grandfather has been diagnosed with colon cancer does NOT mean it is 'in your genes'. Cancer is actually rarely hereditary - fewer than 10% of all cancer cases, all types, are hereditary. Cancer diagnosed after the age of 50 is even less likely to be hereditary. One second degree relative over 50 having cancer doesn't increase your risk. A sign that cancer MAY be hereditary with in a family is when several members of the same side of that family have had the same type of cancer, especially if some developed it at a younger than usual age.

What were your first symptoms of Colon/Rectal Cancer

What were your first symptoms of Colon/Rectal Cancer?
This is addressed to those currently diagnosed with or those who have survived colon/rectal cancer. I know that many times there are no early symptoms of this cancer. So, I would like to know when did you first suspect something was wrong? I am already aware of the symptoms of colorectal cancer, I am just curious as to what symptoms those diagnosed had.

I'm not a cancer patient but I do work for a gastroenterologist who was actually diagnosed with colon cancer last summer (ironic huh?) Anyway, he didn't have ANY symptoms he just decided to have a colonscopy. So if you do experience symptoms, the first might be blood in the stool. If you have a family history of cancer, you might want to get a colonscopy.

God .. Christ &prayer..i pray for us all nightly and through the days.i will also pray for your friend with this terrible decease..medicaid pays for everything.so he is better off with that insurance than medicare.i have that one..pray for him with true belief in Christ.he still does do miracles we just don't always know it.
2 :
he isn't getting worse just because he has medicaid. He is getting worse, because the cancer is getting worse. Medicaid has nothing to do with it.
3 :
Call the american cancer society -moffitt cancer center in tampa fl or shands hospital in gainnesville fl.You can get info from them ,My mother got good care there
4 :
If your friend has been fighting this for 2 years it means he has an advanced cancer and it is unlikely anyone can save him anywhere. The best they can do is give him more time. I̢۪m sorry. Despite what others may say having Medicaid does have something to do with it, but it would have made much more of a difference at the beginning of this fight rather than 2 years later. I recently attended a meeting where a well known surgeon from USC spoke. He told us a patient with a stage 2 colon cancer with private insurance will do far better than a patient with a stage 1 colon cancer with MediCal. This is something well known to anyone who works in the healthcare field. Our healthcare system is broken and this has been coming for 20 years now and nothing has been done to stop it.

What are the chances of beating or i should say containing stage 4 colon cancer also in lungs and liver

What are the chances of beating or i should say containing stage 4 colon cancer also in lungs and liver?
My father has stage 4 colon cancer that has traveled to the liver and lungs. I am trying to stay optimistic as he is about to begin treatments however on a more realistic side what are the chances of containing and shrinking these tumors?? My father has a very good attitude and wants to beat this disease he is 59 years old..

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but I have also have a loved one fighting cancer now. She is also in stage 4 and the chance are pretty slim. I hope the best for you and your dad.
2 :
The good news is your father has a very good attitude. The bad news is the cancer started in the colon and is no longer contained there. It has spread outside the lining of the colon and moved to his liver and lungs. It may already be in other areas of his body as well. The chances of him beating the cancer are extremely low.
3 :
I am also sorry that the chances are probably low as another person already answered but a friend of mine who has been battling ovarian cancer for over 5 years who has been through any and all procedures, surgeries and chemotherapy was told that they could no longer do anything and more or less sent her home to die. She did not give up,she has tried Cancer Centers of America in Tulsa,OK and now has a greater chance of beating the disease. They operated on her and they seem to think they got it all and while there she met alot of people who thought their chances were as slim as hers and Cancer Centers of America helped them as well as they seem to have helped her. Maybe, just maybe Cancer Centers of America is an option along with alot of prayer. Good Luck and God Bless
4 :
My experience with cancer which my Mother died from about 4 years ago, is that once it goes to the liver then there isn't much of a chance for survival. Sorry, I don't want to get you down but it's better to face the truth now than to be totally shocked later when one of your parents dies. At least you will now what to expect.
5 :
For patients with stage IV disease that is localized to the liver, various treatments directed specifically at the liver can be used. Tumors may be surgically removed, burned, or frozen in some cases. Chemotherapy or radioactive substances can sometimes be infused directly into the liver. Patients with stage IV disease rarely live beyond 5 years, and the median survival (meaning half the patients live longer, and half shorter) with treatment is between 1 and 2 years. Please see the webpages for more details on Colon cancer.
6 :
Wow, sorry hun, but it doesn't sound good. Stage 4 is it. Be sure to go with him to the doctors to hear what's expected if you can. Ask your dad to tell his doctor to allow him/her to discuss his case with you & whoever else. When my dad found out he had lung cancer, we were told attitude makes a difference. And he beat it (for about 4 & 1/2 yrs), but in the meantime, other cancers started popping up & it became one fight after another. We had a good 5 years after his first diagnosis which his doctor said only 5% of patients survive so we're thankful for that. I do believe his attitude bought him extra time because he fought against death for so long. He didn't just give up from the start. But after awhile, it was just too hard on him. He took Terceva for the past 2-2&1/2 yrs, but eventually there wasn't anything that could be done. Enjoy whatever time you have with your dad, and be sure to say or do everything that you can as soon as possible. My dad never got to write us the letters he'd wanted because things happened so fast. One Thursday he was fine, talking & walking around.... Friday not feeling too well~had a rough night with alot of pain. Saturday he was gone at 2:45 p.m. Attitude is everything make whatever time he has left as good as possible. It'll be hard for you to not have sad days, but don't let every day be a depressing one. Savor every special moment that you can. Who knows, tomorrow they could come up with a cure. Always have hope, but be realistic. Good Luck, my prayers are with you & your family.

My mother had ovarian, cervical, breast cancer, had surgery, chemo and radiotherapy, it then spread to her bones, lungs and liver. She battled the cancers for 17 yrs, once it hit her bones, we knew it wasn't good. She gave herself a day to cry then went on and faced each day with courage and laughter. When it appeared in her liver the dr's wanted to do radiotherapy and more chemo, she said no more (she was a cancer nurse for over 20 yrs). She wanted to enjoy what was left of her life to the Dr's surprise she lived 2 yrs, she did it with attitude, laughter and a lot of love. Never, Never give up hope, but enjoy the time with your dad as much as you can. The Cancer Centres of America are wonderful. Discuss everything with your dad and the Dr's, but listen to what your dad wants too, God bless

Cancer always starts in one part of the body, and if you can discover and remove it while it's still in that one organ, you have a reasonable chance of beating or containing it, at least for a while. Unfortunately, once the cancer has "escaped" from that one organ and started to sprout in other parts of the body, it's very hard to get the better of it, because it will keep on spreading. Before embarking on treatments, your father MUST make sure he understands what those treatments will do for him. Have a look at the link below, and read the section on "Assessing Treatments". Most cancer treatments make you feel sick, tired and generally miserable. The risk is that if his cancer is too far advanced, he will go through all that pain and misery, and still die at the end of it. Whereas if he says "no" to the treatment, he might have time to go on a last special holiday with his family, or visit long-lost relatives, or fulfil some of his other dreams. For instance, say he has to have six months of treatment, and that will buy him another three months of life. If the treatment is going to make him too ill to enjoy life, or if it prevent him doing things he loves to do, then there wouldn't be much point, would there? In fact he would be worse off. Of course, if the doctors are saying they can give him two or three more years, or even more, then that's a different story. But you need to understand how much more time the treatment will buy him. Having said all that, there are lots of stories of people who have survived far longer than anyone expected. Browse the Gawler Foundation site: their recipe of special diet and meditation really seems to have worked miracles for some people, though I have no personal experience of it.
10 :
My aunt is facing the same thing, except her colon cancer has only spread to her lungs. There is a new procedure called the "CyberKnife" procedure. My aunt may be trying this. CyberKnife involve using radiation to remove tumors. This has had a lot of success. Check out the website for the procedure at http://www.accuray.com/. You may also want to contact other hospitals. I called American Cancer Society. They told me the best hospitals for this type of cancer are John's Hopkin's and Vanderbilt (Nashville). They would be able to give you the best treatment options. My aunt is currently going to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. They are also very cutting edge, and they are giving us a lot of hope. Hang in there!

What does it mean if i had a dream that i was diagnosed with colon cancer

What does it mean if i had a dream that i was diagnosed with colon cancer?
I am the most illness and medical problem free person i have known in my 30+ years, despite leading a horribly unhealthy lifestyle. I dont recall seeing anything in the media lately about colon cancer, here in Australia the focus tends to be on skin, breast and prostate cancer.
Dream Interpretation - 3 Answers

1 :
They have had a lot of advertisements lately about colon cancer. That's probably why you are dreaming about it. At your age, I would think it is highly unlikely that you would have colon cancer. Just chalk it up as a nightmare. If you are still worried, you can always go to the doctor. But I doubt if you need to. You seem to be healthy enough. Usually, they don't even screen you for that until your over your 40's. Don't worry.
2 :
As a mental health professional with 20+ years experience, now retired, I can tell you with all clinical confidence that it means only that you had a dream that you were diagnosed with colon cancer, or any other story you want to make up and believe. Dreams mean only that you were able to sleep in the deepest and most peaceful level of sleep that is available to human beings, which is the area where dreams occur, and nothing more, unless you want to assign some significance to a dream you had, which would have the statistical reliability and validity of the Pinocchio story. Relax. Then you'll be able to sleep wonderfully at peace again, and enjoy all kinds of other stories that your mind can concoct. As Mark Twain said in the opening of his book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", "Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot." God Bless you.
3 :
There are two possibilities here: 1) It could be a message from your subconscious to get a check-up. Edgar Cayce used to say that dreams about the body were particularly significant and were often messages to attend to health issues in waking life. 2) It could be symbolic. To dream that you have cancer denotes feeling hopelessness, grief, self-pity, and unforgiveness. You may feel as though you are wasting your life away. The dream could also represent areas in your life which are bothering you, disturbing you, and hurting you in some emotional way.

If someone has colon cancer and has initial symptons, do they usually get worse if ignored for like 3 years

If someone has colon cancer and has initial symptons, do they usually get worse if ignored for like 3 years?
Well, if someone survives that long, idk how you would survive with undiagnosed and treated cancer for years but I was just wondering this since I know that cancer or tumors just keep getting worse as time goes by and as weeks and months pass its gets into more advanced stages.

if someone in the family has or had colon cancer it is wise to get your colon checked to be sure you dont have it.
2 :
There are different types of cancer. Some are slow growing and some are faster. Early detection is the best defense against all types of cancer.
3 :
They would likely get worse, and the person would likely get new symptoms. Cancer, if left untreated can grow in size as well as spread distantly. Fortunately, there is screening available for colon cancer, so if you have a family history, it is important to get screened!
4 :
Colon cancers are usually slow growing, so can be in the body for years without causing any symptoms, and even when they start causing symptoms, they can be mild and overlooked. BUT mild or no symptoms doesn't mean it's safe to ignore. The cancer will continue to grow, and later treatment will be more radical and have lower chance of success. Most colon cancers are found at stage 3, because of the low rate of symptoms. If you have a family risk of colon cancer, it's important to have the checkups....catching polyps early can mean a very simple treatment (snip out the polyp, job done). Finding a developed tumour will mean surgery and chemo. My husband had stage 3 colon cancer, found by chance when he had appendix removed. Surgery and chemo got him the all clear. The doctors estimate it had been growing for 5-10 years, and was causing no symptoms. It had already spread to one lymph node....if left another 3 years, it would have got further and the outlook would be very poor.

I am 32 year old healthy female, vegetarian for 17 years. no history of colon cancer in family. I sometimes get this quick sharp or dull pain in my rectum. Could there be a connection between colon cancer treatment and massive stroke

Could there be a connection between colon cancer treatment and massive stroke?
It happened to Gwenyth Paltrow's dad...he had colon cancer, overcame it and then passed from a massive heart attack. The same thing happend to my grandfather. Does anyone else know of a similar circumstance?

Having cancer puts a person in a hypercoagulable state meaning that they are more prone to forming blood clots. Many cancer patients develop deep vein thromboses and pulmonary emboli. They can also form clots that travel to the brain causing strokes or CVAs and clots to the heart such as a heart attack or MI.
2 :
It very well could be the toxic drugs (side effects) that the person took to treat the colon cancer. Pharmaceutical drugs are very dangerous, much more so than the diseases they're intended to cure. There are natural methods to treating every disease, even cancer, but the pharmaceutical industry and the government have a lot of money to make off these drugs; thus, the FDA approves them and we die from them.
3 :
who cares you little bitch
4 :
Some treatments in general can lead to a low defense state in your body and can cause another bad condition, because of that you have to follow all the instructions and preventions of your physician. for esample exposure to strong emotions is bad after any cancer treatment or during it.

How can I tell if I have colon cancer

How can I tell if I have colon cancer?
I am 18 years old. I know that it usual doesn't become a threat until 40 years of age, but lately: -I have been overly tired -My stool is thinner then usual -I have had diarhia on and off -It has a different texture and odor to it I am in a panic right now and am hoping to hear that this is just a virus or something. Thanks in advance. It's not bloody, but it looks weird. (Fuzzy looking) Almost as if mold was growing on it or something.

it's much more likely that you have a virus. the only way you can tell for sure is to get a blood test. is your diarrhea bloody at all?
2 :
get a colonoscopy. It is really the best way to test and if they do find a benign polyp then the doctors can remove it right then and there.
3 :
hey, that really does not sound like colon cancer. you're way too young for that too! still, go to the doctor, get your blood checked and maybe an mri. that should do it first. idk what you have, could be lots of stuff. good luck
4 :
Cancer? Unlikely. Something a doctor should check ? Absolutely! You see, Cancer has no symptoms in many cases. Don't panic, but do see your dr asap. Write down exactly what your problems are so you remember. Good luck.
