The 5-year survival rate drops considerably (25%) once the cancer has spread. In most cases, stage IV cancer is not curable. Please see the web pages for more details on Colorectal cancer.
2 :
Ignore statistics, they are not meant for individual patients. Stage IV can be successfully treated as I know individuals who are survivors. It is not easy, however, and much will depend on the skill of the oncologist, the patients overall health, fitness, age, specific location of disease, and response to first line treatment. Statistics are used to track diseases, they are not intended to measure how long a patient has to live. Too many other factors come into play here. This is often why you will hear cancer patients say things like, "I had terminal cancer and outlived the doctors predictions." That's because no doctor can adequately predict what will happen with each individual patient. Your teacher may end up outliving you.

HI Nici Here are some thoughts on healing the issue. Why Natural Colon Cleansing May Save Your Life liquids and fruit A thorough natural colon cleansing is a good idea for anyone. The colon is little more than a storage facility for waste and toxins in your body. If the body functioned perfectly, these harmful elements would never accumulate because they would be evacuated on a regular basis. What makes a periodic colon cleanse necessary is the fact that the body does not always get rid of waste in a timely manner. This often occurs because of the processed foods and refined sugars that we consume in our diet as they tend to slow the digestive system—and thus also delay bowel movements. In time, feces will accumulate and dry along the walls of the digestive tract. Layer upon layer will gather which tends to narrow the opening through the gastrointestinal tract and further slow evacuation. Eventually, a fecal impaction will occur which will cause constipation problems. Laxatives tend to be the standard constipation treatment but they will not provide any kind of bowel cleanse function. Instead, they will stimulate the colon and tend to provide short-term relief from constipation problems but fail to address the underlying problem of accumulated waste along the walls of the gastrointestinal tract. The layers of accumulated waste will naturally begin to add up and there have been recorded cases of 40 pounds of feces and waste being found in a human colon. At any given time, there are an estimated 8 undigested meals in the colon. Without the periodic use of a natural colon cleanser, this concentrated waste will begin to cause long-term damage to the body. It is believed that colon cancer is caused in most cases by this concentration of waste which is why a natural colon cleanser may very well save your life. Even for those whom do not contract colon cancer, there are a number of health problems associated with compacted feces in the gastrointestinal tract. The accumulated waste along the walls of the colon and bowel will lead to fecal impaction—a common source of constipation problems. When waste cannot be evacuated from the body in a timely manner, the bacteria and toxins in the waste will be absorbed into the blood stream and can lead to a number of serious health-related problems, such as: Weakened Immune System Infective Endocarditis Increased Risk for Heart Disease Increased Risk of Stroke Septicemia Death There are a number of bowel cleansing alternatives available that can help eliminate the accumulated feces and waste in the gastrointestinal tract. However, the best colon cleanser is one that is made from all natural ingredients and helps replenish intestinal flora so that the digestive system operates as efficiently as possible. Colon cleansing products made from harsh chemicals and other synthetic lab creations may dissolve compacted feces but they also cause side effects like dehydration—a known cause of constipation. Cleaning out the toxin chemicals in the colon (which is now in the blood) is a HUGE step on the road back to recovery. Best of health to both of you

My best friend has just been diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer and has NO health insurance

My best friend has just been diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer and has NO health insurance?
She's single in her 40's and lives at home with mom and dad. No kids, never married and currently only working a part time job. Any ideas where or how she can get quality medical care in the Chicago area without necessarily having to go to Cook County Hospital ? She's a great lady, very loving and giving and she REALLY needs a break right now. Parents are elderly, low income. Thanks for any suggestions.

Your friend might call the local branch of the American Cancer Society, for some guidance. They may have referral sources for low-income people. Or she might try a major teaching hospital, and see if they have anything to offer. Your friend probably would qualify for the state funded health insurance plan (Medicaid in Pennsylvania) for low income folks, which would allow her to go to any hospital/doctor who accepts Medicaid. Good luck to your friend.

Is there any chance of getting rid of stage 4 colon cancer

Is there any chance of getting rid of stage 4 colon cancer?

Once adenocarcinoma of the colon has spread beyond a surgeon's ability to remove it, it is very unlikely that chemotherapy will provide a cure. Usually we are trying to buy time with systemic chemotherapy agents. As far as the expense - that varies greatly depending on which chemotherapy regimen is chosen by the medical oncologist. Most oncologists are sensitive to cost issues for patients. The oncologist should be explaining expense along with the other side effects vs benefits of trying systemic chemotherapy. From http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/content/CRI_2_4_4X_Treatment_by_Stage_of_Colon_Cancer_10.asp?sitearea= Most patients with stage IV cancer will get chemotherapy and/or targeted therapies to control the cancer. The most commonly used regimens include: * FOLFOX (leucovorin [folinic acid], 5-FU, and oxaliplatin) * FOLFIRI (leucovorin, 5-FU, and irinotecan) * CapeOX (capecitabine and oxaliplatin) * any of the above combinations plus either bevacizumab or cetuximab (but not both) * 5-FU and leucovorin, with or without bevacizumab * capecitabine, with or without bevacizumab * FOLFOXIRI (leucovorin, 5-FU, oxaliplatin, and irinotecan) * irinotecan, with or without cetuximab * cetuximab alone * panitumumab alone The choice of regimens may depend on several factors, including any previous treatments you've had and your overall health. If one of these regimens is no longer effective, another may be tried. For advanced cancers, radiation therapy may also be used to help prevent or relieve symptoms such as pain. While it may shrink tumors for a time, it is very unlikely to result in a cure. If your doctor recommends radiation therapy, it is important that you understand the goal of treatment.
2 :
Very sorry to say, there is no cure for colon cancer. All they can do is prolong your life with radiation and chemotherapy. God bless you
3 :
No one gets "rid" of stage 4 cancer. That means it has moved to other areas of the body. In stage 4, the best doctors can do is try to prolong the person's life. It can't be cured. Good luck to you.

Depends on the number on the scale and if you got yourself checked out last year, what was the scale number. My dad just went in for treatment, last year his number was 1.2, this year is was 10.6. So they caught it early, and he's fine after the surgery. If not treated, he will die, so yes, worry, and get the scan.
3 :
I think you asked a similar question yesterday. There is no diagnostic blood test for any cancer. Stage 1 colon cancer has a 5 year survival rate of 90-95% and recurrence is unlikely and certainly not 7 months after surgery. These are usually slow growing cancers and recurrence is checked by colonoscopy.

How many people die each year from heart disease, heart attacks and colon cancer

How many people die each year from heart disease, heart attacks and colon cancer?
Is that attributed to poor diet?

A lot. But genetics play a huge role.... I know a vegetarian daily runner who dropped dead at 50 from a heart attack.
2 :
http://www.godsdirectcontact.org/veg/alternativeliving/cost_of_meat/english.htm http://www.naturalnews.com/025957_meat_cancer_disease.html actual numbers here
3 :
Many. Part of it is due to poor diet, but genetics, side effects from medication, and poor lifestyle habits (lack of exercise, not dealing with stress, etc.) are also major contributing factors.
4 :
Lots. At least some of the time it may be diet related.

if she has already been diagnosed with it,then why the delay?? she should undergo surgery at the earliest or atleast meet an oncosurgeon!! overall survival is better with colonic cancer than others all the best
2 :
First of all, I am so sorry your mom and family are going through this. Try your hardest to stay strong, keep positive and inform yourself as much as possible. It's scary...I know, but be strong. Your mom will endure several tests to determine the stage she's in. We're going through it with my dad. With colon cancer they usually choose to do surgery first, then treatments. With rectal cancer, they usually do treatments first and then surgery and sometimes more chemo afterward. It also depends on the oncologist and surgeon and the decision of the patient. The survival rate is a lot better now, since there is a lot more research, better equipment and more knowledgable treatment options than years ago. Right now, you'll all go through the hardest part and that's waiting...waiting for test results, waiting for next appointments, waiting for treatment plan, etc... Once your oncologist and surgeon come up with a treatment plan, everything starts to speed up and it does get less stressful. Right now you are all most likely in the shock phase. Once you start learning more about cancer, everything sinks in better and it's easier hanging in there and working as a team to be positive. Having your mom in a positive frame of mind and knowing she has all of you supporting her and helping her through it all WILL help a great deal. Here are some links that should help... http://www.coloncancerfoundation.org/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorectal_cancer http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/colorectalcancer.html http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/colon-cancer/DS00035 http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/colorectal/ http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/colon-and-rectal http://www.medicinenet.com/colon_cancer/article.htm Colon Cancer forums/online support groups... http://www.acscsn.org/Forum/Discussion/?msgrid=3 http://www.cancerforums.net/forum-12.html http://www.cancercompass.com/message-board/cancers/colon-cancer/1,0,119,18.htm http://www.medhelp.org/HealthTopics/Colon_Cancer.html http://www.ehealthforum.com/health/colon_cancer_symptoms.html http://dailystrength.org/support-groups/Cancers http://coloncancer.about.com/mpboards.htm I hope this helps some. First let me start by saying how sorry I am about your mom. I know exactly what you are going through. My mom was diagnosed last Thanksgiving with stage 4 colon cancer. It has spread to her liver & lungs. The survival rate will really depend on what stage your moms cancer is and whether it has spread to other organs. From what I've read about it, colon cancer tends to spread to the liver & the lungs, which is what has happened with my mom. I hope that your mom's cancer has been caught at an early treatable stage. Colon cancer is one of the most preventable/treatable cancers. My mom ignored alot of the warning signs and ignored her doctors when they wanted her to have a colonoscopy several years ago, if she had her cancer would have been caught at a much earlier stage. I wish you and your family strength and that your moms treatment is successful. I'm still scared of losing my mom, but they are coming up with new and better treatments all the time.

Is there a way to help cure colon cancer

I am sure it depends how advanced it is. In some cases removal of cancerous polyps are the end of it. In many other cases it is much further along before it is found. Eating a healthy diet for a lifetime would probably have gone a long way to preventing it. But now who knows.
2 :
Genetics loads the gun and and lifestyle pulls the trigger. Change the whole lifestyle and it will help. There's no such thing that just one food or drink will help to cure him of that. It would be crucial to change the whole lifestyle and follow the 8 natural laws of health 1. Good nutrition (plant-based diet) 2. Exercise 3. Plenty of good water (in and out) 4. Moderate Sunshine 5. Temperance 6. Fresh good air 7. Rest 8.Trust In Divine Power
3 :
I dont know about curing it but I would start with a total body cleansing which can be found online. Look for colon cleansing, you would not believe the stuff that collects in ones colon. When elvis died he had over 40 pounds of impacted fecal material in it. John wayne, over 60 pounds! It is very important to cleanse the body. Go also to a place called ENIVA eniva.com and they sell really great products! You may want to get some information from the company about what they suggest to help him. Of course they cannot claim a cure for anything being that they dont sell drugs, just nutritional supplements. Look into how they are made and you will be impressed. They may be able to suggest some things for him to take but the most important thing they sell is called VIBE. For sure he should be taking that for over all health. Like I said, no promises of a cure but it may help! LIsten to and read some of the testimonies there too.
4 :
A High fiber diet and plenty of water You don't say if this is for you or your grandpa If your grandpa has just had his operation do NOT give him a high fiber diet HE should request to speak to a dietician For yourself absolutely don't worry about this now Keep in touch with your doctor & he will guide you Take Care
5 :
i'm a surgical intern. first off, i'm very sorry. there is no diet that you can go on to prevent, cure, or stop it's spread. surgery is the only option. he did not do anything to cause it to occur. please go see a general surgeon. in the mean time, make him smile. find comfort in the thought that unlike most cancers.. colon cancer can be "cured" by having that particular section of the colon removed. find a general surgeon who specializes in laparoscopy, it will cut recovery in half. best of luck~

This is no place to find a medical diagnosis. You need to find a source for medical consultation that will give you some confidence in the findings. The only way to detect cancer is with a surgical biopsy, and sometimes even those are not 100% accurate. I have had experience with various medical resources including the Mayo Clinic, Sloan Kettering, Northwestern University, etc. From personal experience, the resource that provides the most competent cancer diagnosis and treatment is the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. I would urge you to get a referral and make an appointment as soon as you can.
2 :
No. You will need xrays and a body scan by your doctor. My mother died of colon cancer. Not pretty. If you think you need help, see a doctor right away. Colon cancer is one of the easier to cure cancers if it is caught in time.
3 :
If you have your own colonoscope, then you might be able to do it. It's more comfortable in a medical facility, though. If you gave yourself a sedative, it might make it difficult for you to navigate the colon safely. Without the sedative, it would be quite painful. Go get it done. You'll be glad you did and wonder afterward what you were making such a big deal about. Any test that checked for cancer cells would only reveal a true positive after it was too late to do anything about it.
4 :
Technically, yes you can. Last year CVS Pharmacies heavily advertised a free home colon cancer screening test. I picked one up to take to a meeting with me to show my GI docs. I no longer have the test as we tore it up in the meeting. It was easy to use, but it didn’t exactly test for cancer it checked for occult blood in the stool which is an indicator for colon cancer. I completely understand why you would rather have a home test. I think we all would, but please consider a colonoscopy instead. I cannot tell you how many lives I have seen saved this way. So many times a tiny cancer is found in a polyp that was completely removed during a colonoscopy and that was the complete cancer treatment. No chemo, no surgery, no radiation…nothing else. No other cancer screening test can do that.
5 :
I've done the occult blood test and it is easy, but it is much less accurate. A colonoscopy is not my idea of a fun morning, but it really isn't too bad. And the information provided is much greater. Small problems can be dealt with immediately.
6 :
YES Bobbilee, and it's a good idea. It would be a good idea for many people to check for occult blood in the stool on a regular basis after age 45 or 50. If the stool occult blood tests are regularly negative, your chances are fairly good that a colon cancer is not actively growing. Of course it isn't as good as screening colonoscopy, but it is very easy to do. Your doctor may have the hemoccult cards that you can use yourself at home. This might save you the expense of the colon cancer screening kit at the pharmacy. I would give these hemoccult cards to my patients at no charge when they were interested and willing to check themselves.
