Many people have no symptoms in the early stages of the disease. When symptoms appear, they'll likely vary, depending on the cancer's size and location in the large intestine. In some cases, the symptoms may result from a condition other than cancer, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and sometimes diverticulosis or diverticulitis. Like colorectal cancer, these conditions are treatable. Symptoms of colon cancer: - A change in bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or a change in the consistency of stool for more than a couple of weeks - Narrow stools - Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool - Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain - Abdominal pain with a bowel movement - A feeling that your bowel doesn't empty completely - Unexplained weight loss - Blood in the stool may be a sign of cancer, but it can also indicate other conditions. Bright red blood on bathroom tissue may come from hemorrhoids or minor tears (fissures) in the anus, for example. In addition, certain foods, such as beets or red licorice, can turn stools red. Iron supplements and some anti-diarrheal medications may make stools black. Still, it's best to have any sign of blood or change in your stools checked promptly by your doctor because it can be a sign of something more serious.

Because like the US for example, have a lot of fast food and high fatty foods, lacking fiber. Most people do not eat healthy, aka eat high fat foods. They don't get the fiber that is required in their diet, Eating a diet high in processed foods and red meats, refined grains, sweets and desserts may increase your risk of developing the disease. All in all is the reason its higher in wealthy countries is because of the foods and their diet, because in developing countries don't have those foods.

Colon cancer...?
My 60 year old mother had a colonoscopy where they discovered blood in her colon. She's not saying much but has to have a stomach biopsy as well as a colon biopsy. What could this mean?

It could mean several things. Could be an ulcer, my father in law recently had the same finding and it was an ulcer. He was actually passing bloody stool. It could be something worse. Try to stay positive and not worry too much. I know it is hard not to worry about someone you love, but it doesn't do anyone any good. If she isn't talking about it, odds are she is a worried too. Take her out and have some fun. When she is ready she will talk to you.
2 :
your doctors may be thinking of an inflammatory bowel disease - maybe Crohn's Disease. they may be looking for clues under the microscope on why your mother bled.

No one on here can tell you if it's cancer or not, but I would suggest visiting your doctor. There might be something going wrong up there so they might do a colonoscopy and find some strange polyps or so. My personal opinion, visit your family doctor, no need for a rush, but make an appointment ASAP. Good luck!
2 :
It sounds like normal symptoms of constipation which causes the hemorrhoids . Before you freak out, just try some over the counter hemorrhoid cream. Also try to increase the fiber in your diet. Maybe try Metamucil or some other fiber supplement. Drink at least 8 cups of water a day - that also helps with constipation. Get some exercise. You also could buy an over the counter stool softener like sennakot. The cramps you experience are also probably related to your constipation. It is doubtful that this is cancer - especially since you have been having trouble with constipation. However, if things aren't better in a week or two of doing the above, make an appointment with your family doctor.

most cancers have a chance of being terminal and i have two people i am close to that the cancer is persistent and it comes back. they have lived longer than doctors expected. i am not sure what to tell you but maybe this url can give you answers. http://www.state.nj.us/health/ccr/survivorshiprpt.pdf
2 :
First, it depends on where the cancer is located, whether they are going to try to remove it or not and whether he is going to receive any chemotherapy or radiation or surgery or any or all of the above. That determines how "bad" the cancer is. If he chooses to do nothing and they have told him it is terminal, it means the cancer will advance and he will die. The time frame is uncertain in all cancers. Spend as much time as you can with him, remembering good times that you have had with him and talking about those times.

I'm going to attempt to answer your questions as delicately as possible, since you seem to be very young. You probably should be asking your parents these questions, but maybe you don't think you can. So : "colon cancer...? alright so i found out my grandopa who i am really close to has colon cancer....how bad is this type of cancer?" This type of cancer can be extremely bad! "he has had it before and it came back and they said it was terminal! what does terminal mean? Is this bad? plz help i am scared...thankyou" The Doctors use the word "terminal" to indicate that there is no cure for his disease, and he is going to pass because of it. Your grandpa is on his way to heaven, hon. No need for you to be scared about this. It does happen to everyone. Dying is just a part of a persons life. You will miss him terribly, and you will probably cry a few times because you miss him, but believe me when I tell you he is going to go to a much better place. Spend all the time you can with him, but please don't fret about his illness. May God bless you and keep you.
4 :
Please dont hate these people they are not jerks. They are simply being honest rather than telling you the rainbow fairy tale that all will be well and he will most certainly live forever. The truth is death is the ONE thing certain in life. Terminal means statistically it will kill him. Statistically the elderly cant handle the harsh treatment needed and statistically prognosis on a relapse is worse. This will be the time that end of life issues will be discussed. Euthanization (a planned peaceful death) needs to be at least considered because it is mentally easier on the patient most importantly but also everyone else involved. You yourself need to see a psychologist or other mental health professional and consider anti depressants. This will be a long hard time for you and you will need help. At the very least consider a local support group.

Someone I know has stage four colon cancer, spread to his liver and lungs, he hasn't been to work for over three months what are the chances of him coming back?

Very poor but not impossible.

I suggest your friend definitely not get chemotherapy. The cure rate for cancer using chemotherapy is 2 - 3% maximum. What the medical industry does to people is just amazing and look at the cost! 99% of ALL cancer is caused by infections. Biofilms protect the virus and bacteria from being killed by macrophages in the body and when they get larger than 14mm, they spawn new ones and that is how cancer spreads. Probably the number one source for colon cancers is due to bad digestive issues and infections in the teeth. All these are due to modern diet and modern dental materials and procedures. It is possible to become healthy, but ALL infections have to be eradicated in the body, biofilms destroyed, good detoxing and changing the diet all contribute to making it possible to become healthy again. It is an all out effort that one has to wage to beat this disease. Modern medicine just does not do a good job at all. The allopathic approach to medicine simply does not work well in the fight against degenerative diseases. Just look at Jerry's kids after $1 billion dollars has been collected. good luck to your friend
4 :
why would he want to go back to work if the cancer has spread that far? that would be stupid.
5 :
slim. My sister has the same, except lymphnodes instead of liver. She was diaged in Apr of 04. She was able to continue working for quite a while, then had to quit, was able to go back part time for a bit, but is no longer able to do so. Usually once it has penetrated the liver, the end comes fairly quickly.

No but you might be eating wrong. Go see the doctor if you are worried.

It's prob constipation, and colon cancer is something you check for once your 50 + don't worry :)....but if you check this website...it tells you everything in detail....i'll paste it here:) Symptoms Constipation Constipation, having a bowel movement less than three times a week, can be your body's way of suggesting that you make some minor adjustments in diet or exercise. However, constipation can also be a symptom of a colon cancer. In the beginning of the colon, waste material is slushy and can easily maneuver around anything that gets in its way. But as it nears the end of the colon, stool solidifies and is less forgiving of obstacles. A tumor in the rectum or far end of the colon can make it very difficult for waste to get by, thereby causing constipation. Thin Stool Once stool is no longer in its slushy phase and begins to take shape, how it looks when it leaves your body can provide clues to what's going on inside. For example, thin stool can sometimes indicate that your waste squeezed by some sort of obstacle on its way out. In the case of colon or rectal cancer, that obstacle would be a tumor in the latter part of the colon or the rectum.Stomach Cramps Sometimes a tumor causes a bowel obstruction, which is basically a road block in your colon. Depending on the severity of the blockage, solids, liquids, and even gas may be prevented from passing by. This leads to abdominal cramps that can be severe, especially if the blockage restricts blood flow to the colon. Painful cramps may also indicate that a tumor has perforated (poked through) the bowel wall; bowel perforation is a medical emergency. Bright Red Blood in Your Stool Tumors tend to bleed -- not a whole lot and not constantly, but they do bleed. As a result, some of that blood may show up in your stool. If the tumor is in the beginning of the colon, the blood will most likely be dry and virtually invisible by the time the waste leaves your body. However, if the tumor is in the rectum or toward the end of the colon, it may still be fresh and therefore, bright red. Unexplained Weight Loss Many of us wouldn't want to question unexplained weight loss. We'd just be happy to be losing weight! But unfortunately, effortless weight loss is generally a sign that something is wrong. In the case of colon cancer, unexplained weight loss can be a sign that a tumor is stealing the nutrients intended for your body. Sense of Fullness A tumor that grows toward the end of the colon or in the rectum may cause a sense of fullness. This is because your body senses that there's something else hanging around by its exit. What it doesn't know is that it's a tumor and it's attached, so it isn't going anywhere. It basically sees the tumor as a stubborn piece of waste, so you get that "I still have to go" sensation that can't be relieved. Nausea and Vomiting The occurrence of nausea and vomiting alone, without other symptoms, is unlikely an indication of colon cancer. There are lots of reasons for feeling sick and throwing up. Potentially cancer-related ones include pain, poor blood flow, and constipation. For example, a tumor that's large enough to cause a bowel obstruction may lead to constipation, restrict blood flow, and cause painful abdominal cramping. Any one or all three of these underlying colon cancer symptoms can result in nausea or vomiting. Gas and Bloating A pattern of gas and bloating may be an indication that a tumor is growing in the colon and occasionally causing a blockage. Even if the tumor isn't large enough to cause a bowel obstruction on its own, stool may periodically get hung up on the tumor while it's passing by, causing a temporary obstruction. While your bowel is blocked and air is trapped, you'll be bloated. When the blockage resolves itself, all that air will need somewhere to go and you'll be gassy. Lethargy Sometimes the presence of a tumor causes iron deficiency anemia, a condition that can cause you to feel extremely tired (lethargic). Tumors tend to bleed, which results in a loss of iron -- an element that transports oxygen to your cells. This symptom is characteristic of tumors in the beginning of the colon. Since it's pretty roomy there, tumors can get fairly big and bleed a lot before causing any other colon cancer symptoms. The blood usually dries before leaving the body, too, which also allows the bleeding to go unnoticed. The Bottom Line Even though you have an idea of what to look out for, it's important to remember that a tumor can grow for years before causing any colon cancer symptoms. In addition, all of these symptoms are very poor predictors in and of themselves.

Kate - Listen to Shika...also remember that you need to tell someone and get checked out because, this symptom is a symptom of many other things. And you want to get treated if there is a problem and not ignore it. If ignored...little problems tend to become big problems.

Colon Cancer.....?
My friend revealed to me that he thinks he might have colon cancer because there is blood in his stool. He has no benefits to go to the docter. I am scared. Help.

Blood in in the stool does not mean colon cancer....but if it is doctors will just want to cut out his colon....refer him to the site www.herbdoc.com to do a 5 day bowel cleanse.
2 :
Hi, blood in the stool does not automatically mean colon cancer, there are a few other reasons for blood in the stool, hemorroids, anal fissure, which is a small cut in the anus region, or polyps. Is there anywhere he can go to have this checked?,as really this situation needs to be resolved. Hopefully all will be well.
3 :
blood in stools can also be a sign of a bleeding ulcer. dont be scared, get him to the doctor to ensure everything is okay :)
