If it is a colonoscope examination, you should get it within a week. If it is a biopsy report it might take about 15 - 20 days. All of them can be done faster if the situation warrants. Call your primary doctor.
2 :
Be Patient.
3 :
I had to wait a week for the biopsy results from the colonosopy to come back.

For those of you who have had colon cancer

For those of you who have had colon cancer?
can you describe the pain and how you felt? For example when you had colon cancer did it feel like an intense hunger in your stomache and PAIN - and then bleeding out your rectum was it heavy or light etc. also every time you pooped did it seem like you always had diarrhea how do you function without your gall bladder? do you mean operated on or taken out o_o?

The vast majority of people who have had colon cancer didn't really know anything was wrong until they got a scope done. If you are having red blood from your rectum then you have an internal hemorrhoid. What you are describing sounds an awful like like gallbladder stones, which I have had, and not so much like colon cancer. Although I haven't had colon cancer my dad has had it now for quite awhile. He never had any pain, was just occasionally constipated. But when I had gallbladder attacks, I would have intense pain and gnawing in my stomach area, followed by diarrhea, often accompanied by red blood due to the rectal irritation. I got my gallbladder out and all that went away.

If it is caught in the early stages, your chances are very good.
2 :
It depends on what stage the cancer was in at the time of diagnosis. For more information, you can check out the following website: http://www.coloncancerfoundation.org/aboutcoloncancer.htm#stages
3 :
I don't know the exact likliness, but let me tell you this: My Mom's friend had Colon cancer - and she's 100% clean now.
4 :
it really depends on the stage, the kind of tumor and also the overall health status of the patient. surgeries + chemotherapy may enhance the chances of survival. so it's difficult to tell you any figures here, sry.
5 :
My dad had it but it was detected in it's early stages. They removed the cancerous cells and he is very much alive and kicking. Hopefully it hasn't spread too severely in your friends case.

What does the cancer number mean? My dad has had colon cancer for a few yrs & it has spread to his lungs

What does the cancer number mean? My dad has had colon cancer for a few yrs & it has spread to his lungs.?
My mom keeps referring to cancer numbers but won't go into details. First it was like 2, 5, 11 and now she said it went up to 750 and now 1100. I don't understand what those numbers mean. If anyone knows for sure....please state source, I really need to know and have tried to research and haven't found anything.

Since you don't know which tests your mother is referring to it is hard to say for certain what these numbers mean. I have included a site that lists different tests used to detect cancer. I hope this helps.
2 :
There are many "cancer numbers" for the hundreds of types of cancers that we humans develop. There are numerous blood tests available to follow colon adenocarcinomas - if that is the histologic type of your dad's malignancy. We do not have this information here. http://www.tc-cancer.com/tumormarkers.html Probably the "CEA" blood test - Carcinoembryonic antigen . It would sure help if you knew which test. If this is the CEA, the numbers would indicate significant growth of the stage IV colon adenocarcinoma with pulmonary metastases. Stage IV adenocarcinoma of the colon cannot be cured, so this would not be a good sign. Is he receiving chemotherapy? Of course the medical oncologist treating your dad would know much more about this than any of us over the internet. It is best to go with your family member when there are visits to the medical oncologist who has all of the information which we do not have here. We cannot see the x-rays or CT scans of the lungs. We don't know exactly which test you are asking about. In short, we have to guess with inadequate information. The oncologist who is seeing your dad on a regular basis must be - or should be - explaining all of this at each office visit. That is part of the job he or she is being paid to do. Note that these "numbers" never tell us the future. There is no way to know how long someone with a malignancy has to live by any blood test numbers. The key to these "numbers" is the trend - AND - the clinical observation of how the person is functioning. Your dad's oncologist knows all of this. To know what is going on, you need to be there. I drove 1200 miles to be there when my mom saw her urologist for discussion of her bladder carcinoma. Maybe you are a great distance away and cannot travel. It is very dificult to get first hand information long distance.

Are there any colon cancer survivors here

Are there any colon cancer survivors here?
Well my 32 year old brother-in-law just got diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer ; / and I'm just completely depressed... My sister just married him about four years ago and they have a one year old daughter and a 2 year old son. They just took out a 600k loan to buy a commercial property so financially they are in a difficult situation as well. It just breaks my heart knowing that there's such a high chance they will never see their father when they are older and that my bro-in-law mightn't see his children grow up...... Also, if anyone has tried effective alternative treatments besides just the conventional methods please inform me if you can and your recovery stories would be nice as well. Thanks guys.

I have colorectal problems and the word cancer comes up although I've never been diagnosed with it yet. It's caused me to do some research. Colon cancer can be removed and a person can live with a colostomy. Not all, but many. I've also heard recently that cancer can be cured by breast milk. Look for a breast milk bank. I'm not kidding. I'm not trying to be gross or perverse. It fixes the immune system in such a way that it fights it. But he needs to have the diseased parts removed and just use breast milk and other alternative treatments to build the immune system to hopefully right what's left. I also read something about seaweed. Dont' give up. That's the worst thing that can be done. Be sure to be proactive and supportive and allow both hope and talk for cures and treatments and the future AND talk of closure and wills and resolution. He will have to deal with both possibilities. Remember we all die. Unfortunately. It drives me crazy. But we all die. If he does die at least he knows it's coming and can make a few preparations he normally wouldn't have thought of until much later. And everyone has a chance to tell him they love him and what his life has meant to them.

There are survivors for every type of cancer and at every stage of cancer. Your brother in law needs to locate an oncologist who he can trust and who specializes in this type of disease. He needs someone who will not discourage him. He needs a positive attitude, courage, and determination. He needs everyone on his side as he fights this battle. He needs all the information that he can handle . . not outdated information. Cancer research is ongoing, papers and new treatments come out monthly . . what may have been true about a disease last year may be totally different today. Be extremely careful about what you read concerning 'statistics' as they do not apply to individuals. Here are a few places to start the research process: Colon Cancer Alliance http://www.ccalliance.org Colon Cancer Discussion List http://listserv.acor.org/archives/colon.html NCCN: Colon and Rectal Cancer Clinical Guidelines http://www.nccn.org/patients/patient_gls/_english/_colon/1_introduction.asp Treatment guidelines for patients http://www.nccn.org/patients/patient_gls/_english/pdf/NCCN%20Colorectal%20Guidelines.pdf American Cancer Society:Colon Cancer Survivor Proves Doctors Wrong http://www.cancer.org/docroot/FPS/content/FPS_1_Colon_Cancer_Survivor_Proves_Doctors_Wrong.asp Remember, do not listen to the 'terminators', there is ALWAYS hope.

If you or a friend or family member has received this diagnosis from the family's physician or a specialist, I would ask him/her for a second opinion. He/she should not get angry, but let you get it from another doctor. Ask both of them about the size and progress of the colon cancer and the size and progress of the liver tumor. Then ask for their plans. Ask as many questions as possible--that's your right. Get the facts, not the fears! Then I would talk again with specialist, parents, the pastor of a church, a teacher, the help-line at the front of the phone book. People in the know. I'd also stop ignoring my spiritual side, because our spirit helps us to live with cancer and what lies ahead. I'd not get started into all these miracle cures which say they work--they just take your money and don't work, just like tv televangelists. But I'd search for a good, spiritual gathering of believers where you can approach an adult about it, possibly with your parents, or not. And don't get anxious. And if you smoke, stop!!

Call 1-800-herbdoc and ask for advice. (extreme budget: maybe $350 ) Eat many, many cloves of garlic. (Like 20 - 40 a day.) You can buy them already peeled in a plastic jar at Sams or Walmart. (Eat lemon with that, or nobody will be able to stand you, even yourself.) (budget: $20, max) Eat lots, I mean Lots of vitamin C. If you feel feverish, that's the cancer cells dying. You may want to take enemas, or do "cleanses" to throw off the toxins, or back off a little at that point so that the toxins themselves won't kill you. (budget: $15 ?) There's something called zeolites, from a company called Waiora. It adjusts the pH in your body so the cancer cells can not survive. Look it up on the internet. Buy some. Do what they say. (budget: $125) Good luck. Most death is a choice. Try to take action before you're too tired to choose. Oh. Get a Jack Lalane juicer (easiest to manage). Buy organic vegetables, rinse them off, stuff 'em in there and drink them. If you die, you'll go down feeling terrific! (budget: $125 or so; maybe $100 after rebate) Slow down on dairy products, if you possibly can. Eat Lots of fresh greens, or put them in your juice. You want to really keep things moving (elimination) as your body is throwing off the wastes of the dying cells. You can do this. Life is worth it. Think positive thoughts. No Negatives! None! (organic veggies are "expensive;" What's life worth to ya?) As you go through this journey the people around you will sort themselves into the ones that are positive in your life and the ones that are not. You may have to leave some "killers" behind. No worries. After you're O.K. again, the new you can find plenty of friends. You'll be more fun and more good looking and more powerful than you ever were before. Trust. Oh... Prayer really seems to help. If you can possibly get into a live praying environment - praying for anything - that will help. Praying specifically for your situation may be a little negative and a little whining and get tiresome. Pray for other things and people. Pray to get to know God better. This could end up being the happiest time of your life. No kidding. Try all these things. If you die, you'll die goodlooking and happy. grin If you don't like the flavor, or the expense, or the inconvenience, wait'll you see what the alternative is like! Either way, God loves ya. He just can't tell you that when you're dead. (Psalm 88:10)

Diet WILL NOT cure cancer that has spread, esp in the liver. Dont waste your money on treatments that dont work. once it is secondary it will continue to spread thru the body to various organs. My Mum past away in sept this year from kidney cancer that met. to the liver and lung. once in the liver it was EXTREMELY aggressive.. My grandma had bowel that met to liver, and so did my step Mum. My step Mum tried all sorts of expensive new age treatments (diets) and it was an absolute waste of time and money. We tried everything with my Mum, postive thinking, diets healthy eating... NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING would have kept her alive... my advice is to enjoy what time you have left,

If you are disabled you should already be getting Medicare.
2 :
If you apply for Social Security Disability benefits and receive them, there will be a 2 year waiting period before you can get Medicare. There are some rare cases when social security administration will grant early medicare benefits but don't count on it, I know of this particular law due to my own set of circumstances. Some cities offer health care services to low-income people. You will have to do a search to see if you can find a hospital that will help you. Good luck and I wish you improved health. Akasha
3 :
You can be under 65 and have Medicare if you have been receiving SSDI for 24 months so you probably qualify and should apply for this disability social security right away. Meantime, if you have no resources and low income you can get Medicaid through your county social services department. There are private foundations that offer help for cancer patients. Google it.

This is a pet peeve of mine with the Social Security / disability system in the USA. As others have said above, there is such a long waiting time that many of my patients weakened and died from their advanced cancers before they were ever eligible to receive a nickel of benefits. Many of these people had no insurance, so I treated them at my own expense. I never refused a patient care just because they could not pay. That is why I never made the big bucks that many doctors take home now. These days you will not find too many doctors who will see you free of charge and also pay for your chemotherapy treatments out of their own pockets. But, there may be a few out there still.

Learn how to identify and treat chronic renal failure (CRF) As your installation is slow, the body can adapt well until late stages of chronic renal failure. Therefore, it is a silent disease. Many people think they can identify a kidney patient for pain or a decrease in the volume of urine. Nothing more false.

Are hormone shots helpful in fighting colon cancer

Are hormone shots helpful in fighting colon cancer?
My dad has 1 in 10 cells showing cancer, they are recommending hormone shots every 3 months. Is this helful or not? He doesn't want to get the shots if it is not going to slow it down or stop the growth.

It would help greatly if you could tell us what specific hormonal agent is being recommended. There are many types of hormones that can be used clinically. Most are not generally used for adenocarcinoma of the colon. And do you mean one in ten lymph nodes show cancer rather than "one in ten cells?" Has you dad had a colon resection? Are you sure this isn't prostate cancer? Adenocarcinoma of the prostate that has spread to the colon might commonly be treated palliatively with hormonal agents. If the doctor is recommending "adjuvant" (preventive) treatments, he or she should be providing you and your dad with the data regarding expected benefits verses risks of treatment. Ideally you would be present with him at the doctor visit when this treatment was recommended. I would not recommend a treatment without explaining the chances for benefit based on experience reported in the medical literature with groups of similar patients. Sometimes there are no family members present, and the patients cannot recall all of the details regarding the explanation. Also, I suspect there are times when today's doctors are too busy to fully explain the rationale of treatments recommended. Modern medical practice with the limits on reimbursement for time seems to force doctors to run people through faster leaving less time to explain things. I was fortunate to retire before I was forced by Medicare and other insurance carriers to see patients more quickly.
