Colon cancer reoccurring

Colon cancer reoccurring
In August 2004 we found out my dad had colon cancer. He had surgery to have it removed in October 2004. Had chemo from January-June 2005. Since then he has had good check ups. He had a CAT scan about a year ago and all was fine. He hasn't had a colonoscomy (sp) in three years and he's due for one in September. He had surgery last November to remove hernias that were a result of his cancer surgery. In June he had problems with his stomach so he went to the doctor. They thought he had a stomach virus. They did X rays and at first they thought they saw something so they did more and sent them off. It came back that they didn't see anything. This past week he was having problems with his stomach again. It got better yesterday. He is suppose to go back to the doctor tomorrow. It scares my family and I that his cancer may be back. His surgery was four years ago. I'm wondering if there are any stats on anything of the chances of it coming back around four years or so. Thanks for any info.

Cancer is one of those things that there isn't any way of predicting its ability to return beyond "it can". He can help prevent it from coming back by maintaining good digestive health, which I'm certain his oncologist told him. I don't know if anyone has ever suggested this to him, but studies have shown that eating two pounds of broccoli every week can greatly reduce the risk of colon cancer, but I don't know about its ability to prevent it from returning once a person has colon cancer. Either way, broccoli is extremely good for digestive health in general, so I doubt it would hurt him.

Sadly enuff to say, this is a very hard time for your whole family and your dad as well.. And sadly enuff to say, cancer can't reoccur.. but by going to his check ups every so often thats a plus gotta keep one step ahead of it... best of luck!

There's no replacement for thorough evaluation (exam, CEA blood test, and scans as clinically indicated). But, some good news- the vast majority of colorectal cancers that recur do so within 3 years. So, God bless, best wishes
