Stage 4 cancer is not good. The colostomy report should be able to tell you for sure how advanced everything is. Everyone is different so it is impossible to tell you how "long" a person has. My dad was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in sept. 2006. They told him he has only 8 months to live. Well over a year later he is doing great. He has chosen to go without any medical treatment. He has completely changed his lifestyle, exercising and eating completely organic and healthy. He has also spent a lot of time praying. Anyways, his symptoms are gone and he feels better then ever. But like I said, everyone is different. Good luck!

For a Stage IV CRC the prognosis is very poor, and treatment is usually palliative. A stage IV tumour has penetrated the bowel wall and spread to adjacent organs. However other factor must be considered, such as nodal involvement, and metastatic spread. If it means anything to you the 5 year survival is only 8% for an untreated stage IV tumour. I know this is quite scientific, but it is impotant to remember every case is different. The fact that doctors are attempting a colostomy is very positive, and your friends prognosis will depend on the outcome of this surgery. If there is no metastatic spread this operation could cure his cancer. In my opinion it is best to wait til after surgery and speak to the surgeon. Hope everything goes well :)

Dad lasted 5 years at that point. It moved to his lungs. If it is Vietnam related, contact your local purpleheart.com organization for financial assistance right away. They will do the leg work for you.

As David C. said, the 5 year survival rate is only 8%. My husband lived only 10 months and 1 week after his diagnosis; not quite 4 months after undergoing his colostomy (as well as a 2nd surgery and numerous complications). He was 58.
