Symptoms. At first there might not be any. A family history of colon cancer, smoking, obesity, and eating a diet high in smoked foods (and increasing age) are all linked to colon cancer. If none of these applies to you, I wouldn't worry overmuch. Blood in the stool is a frequent sign, and it can be invisible, so you can acquire a cheap test from the pharmacy called a guiac test kit that will show if you have any occult (hidden) blood in your feces. If you have frank (fresh) blood, most often that's from internal hemmorhoids. Diarrhea has an awful lot of causes and it will almost always effect the color of the feces. If there is no fever with it, or if it is just temporary, you might not need any treatment. Diarrehea with a fever probably requires antibiotics and maybe IV fluids.

Impossible to diagnose cancer that way. Colon cancer is diagnosed using a test called a colonoscopy. The doctor snips off a piece of the bowel (colon) and looks at it under a microscope to see if it is cancerous. Symptoms of colon cancer include your symptoms and others. Sometimes there are no symptoms. Diet changes can also cause all those symptoms as well. Take a look at the article listed below and go see the doctor if you feel you are at risk.

There are many things you could have, so don't panic! I'll include links here so you can look these up if you want to know more about the particular conditions. You could have IBS, which can cause diarrhea and gas ( http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/ibs/ ), celiac disease (which is an intolerance to wheat, barley and rye: http://www.celiac.org/ , )or--and this is unlikely--Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis (http://www.ccfa.org.) The symptoms of colon cancer usually start with bloody poo, changes in the movements, pain, weight loss, and fatigue. My grandma first had the blood with no other symptoms. It is not the most likely thing you have--there are so many conditions. You'll need to see a gastroenterologist. They'll do some fun and exciting tests. You'll likely have a colonoscopy and they may do some blood work. Colonoscopies themselves aren't so bad--you're generally asleep during them (I've had too many to remember!--I have Crohn's), but the prep ain't no fun. By many, many magazines cuz you'll be in the bathroom all night. But it's better than having something wrong and not knowing what it is!
