For awhile now, I've had constant diarrhea and I've been having bowel movements way more frequently. The other day I had blood in my stool. I often have gas and cramps in my stomach. Colon cancer runs in my family but I am only a teenager. Could I have cancer? I am terrified to go to a specialist but I know I might need to if that's what my doctor recommends. Please help! I've had these symptoms for a few weeks or a month now.

Hey, cheer up, it probaly turns out fine. But it's possible yes. So go get your doctor, and he's probaly better to answer this question than people on Yahoo.

Blood in your stool can come from different sources - hemorrhoids, rectal fissures from all the diarrhea plus bowel disorders and diseases in addition to cancer. It can also come from a bacterial infection of your bowel. Hopefully, you have taken some immodium to try and stop the diarrhea, changed your diet to bulk up your stools and added a container of yogurt to your diet which will help decrease the diarrhea. Your first stop should be your family doctor who can run all the basic tests needed to determine whether this is something minor that can be easily treated or if you need a referral to a specialist.

I don't want to scare you but yes you can get colon cancer at any age. You have to tell your doctor; being afraid is not going to help anything. It could also be something completely benign -- you could have blood in your stool merely because of your diarrhea (going all the time will create fissures in your anus; gross I know but true); you could have spastic colon, the d. can be a phase (depends on what you mean by constant -- three days? a week?) that means nothing -- a virus that needs to run its course, nervousness, etc. You need to get this checked out so that you can quit stressing.
